How much French do you need for Canada PR?

To be eligible for Canada PR, the level of French is required at least a CLB 7, corresponding to a B2 level on the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). This means that you should have moderate to advanced level language skills.

The Canadian government has made it mandatory for all skilled immigrants to prove their language proficiency in either English or French. The language test evaluates four abilities: writing, reading, listening, and speaking. To measure your French levels, you can take the TEF or TCF. The TEF test has four modules covering oral comprehension, oral expression, written comprehension, and written expression 3.

The required minimum level and the number of points you’ll get for your language skills will depend on the specific program you’re applying to. For example, to qualify for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, you must score at least CLB 7 in all four abilities of your first official language. If you meet the minimum threshold in each of the four language abilities of your second official language, you will get 4 points.

Your test results must be less than two years old when you submit your application for permanent residence. If you’ve been invited to apply for permanent residence, check that your language test results will still be valid when you plan to apply. If you haven’t been invited to apply for permanent residence, you may want to make sure your results are valid for the rest of the time you’ll be in the pool. If your results expire before you can apply, you should be tested again or apply before your test results expire or decline the invitation and go back into the pool to be considered in the future. If you apply for permanent residence with language test results that have expired, your application will be refused.
